President Reagan signed the Freedom Coin Act on July 9, 1985, which authorized the American Silver Eagle program, effective October 1, 1985, with the proviso that no coins shall be minted or minted, sold, before September 1, 1986. Finally, the first American Eagle silver coin was issued on November 24, 1986, and began to sell well worldwide.
