Krugerrand coins once dominated the precious metals marketplace. In the early decades of gold bullion coining, the South African Krugerrand’s 1 oz gold coin accounted for 90% of gold bullion coins in the world. The introduction of other gold bullion coin programs in the 1980s, combined with an economic boycott by Western nations, cut into the dominance of the Krugerrand.
In 2017, the South African Mint marked the 50th anniversary of the series with the launch of a first-ever Silver Krugerrand. The move proved so popular that the mint made the Silver Krugerrand an annual release and expanded its reach in the market to silver buyers in the process.
Paul Kruger features on the obverse of all 2022 1 oz South African Silver Krugerrand Coins. This design has featured on the coins of the Krugerrand series since 1967 when the gold coins were introduced. It was originally designed in the 1890s and used on the historic South African Pound coinage.
A Springbok antelope is found in the reverse design of 2022 South African Silver Krugerrand Coins. This design is also a historic coin design in South Africa that was first used in the 1930s. It depicts a Springbok as it moves along the plains.
