Adolph A. Weinman’s 1916 “Walking Liberty” inspired the coin’s obverse (front). Once the coin was introduced, collectors and enthusiasts flocked to it immediately because the distinctive design was already popular among the general public. Next, John Mercanti created the reverse (back) with a heraldic eagle concealed beneath a shield. The eagle, reminiscent of the Great Seal of the United States, carries a banner in its beak and holds an olive branch in its right talon and arrows in its left. Thirteen five-pointed stars, which stand in for the original Thirteen Colonies, are displayed beneath the legend and above the eagle.
